If you have always dreamed of visiting London and seeing the sights, you may have wondering what to do when you get there. There is so much to see and do in London when visiting that to see everything could take months. What if you only have a couple of weeks?

London isn’t just a great place to visit the hundreds of museums; you can also take a peek at some of its most favorite landmarks. London is well known for its palaces and other historical buildings that allow visiting and tours.

One of the most highly visited buildings in the London area is Buckingham Palace. It gives you the opportunity to see the Royal Throne Room, Ballroom and more on it’s tour. THINKING ABOUT THE LANGUAGE

PRESENT SIMPLE:

We use present simple to talk about regular actions, facts and events.

Examples:

The Tower of London offers tours throughout most of the year

London is well known for its palaces and other historical buildings

Remember: to make negative sentences you must use do not (don't) and does not (doesn't)

Visitors don't pay to visit The National Gallery

If you want to make an interrogative sentence, use do and does

Does your father allow you to go to the concert?

ACTIVITY 3

Complete these sentences by using an appropriate verb in the Present Simple:

Westmisnter Abbey ................... an old building in the city centre.

Visitors ................ credit cards to buy presents.

Be polite when you .................... a drink in a pub.

They usually travel by plane.

HOW TO DESCRIBE A PLACE

Are these places beautiful?

Would you like to visit them?

Where do you think they are?

Have a look at this text:

In Venice light and water combine to create a restless magic. All borderlines are eradicated some where between dream and reality, present and past, the ethereal nature of this town has fascinated many famous people.

And now, read this piece of information:

Brighton is a tourist centre on the south coast, about eight-five kilometres from London. It is a medium-sized town with a population of around one hundred and fifty thousand.

These texts describe two different towns.

Which text gives you a more precise information?

Which one is easier to understand?

Which text gives you a personal impression?

When describing places it is important to use appropiate adjectives. When you use two or more adjectives, 'opinion' adjectives are placed before the ones used for describing real characteristics.

a beautiful red building

an interesting new film

This is the correct order to place adjectives before a noun:

OPINION+SIZE+AGE+SHAPE+COLOUR+ORIGIN+MATERIAL+PURPOSE
+NOUN

ACTIVITY 4

Put the following adjectives in the right order:

a (thin/tall) man                                          a (middle-aged/ black) woman

a (yellow/plastic/expensive) raincoat            a (tourist/old/interesting) town

Adverbs are sometimes used to make ordinary adjectives stronger or weaker:

He is a very intelligent boy

It was a pretty old theatre

Remember! You can improve your writting by using adjectives and adverbs.
