Scientific Officer at the Electron Microscopy Unit - Plymouth University

Plymouth University is seeking to appoint a Scientific Officer in Analytical Microscopy based at the Electron Microscopy Unit. The post is intended to support optimum utilisation of the suite of microscopes and advanced analytical techniques that have been recently acquired to support Analysis and Materials Characterisation across a range of research areas and degree programmes within the Faculty of Science & Environment. The unit has recently benefitted from the acquisition of a JEOL 7001 field emission scanning electron microscope, with a suite of advanced Oxford Instruments materials analysis facilities, e.g. wavelength dispersive (WDS) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) equipment and a GATAN microtensile stage. In addition, the unit hosts a low vacuum SEM (JEOL 6610LV) equipped with EDS and EBSD systems from Oxford Instruments, along with a new 120kV JEOL transmission electron microscope (TEM). These facilities are used to support teaching and research across nanotechnology, biological and earth sciences, biomedical science and materials science and engineering.

The successful candidate will have a first degree in a related field of science or engineering and a PhD in which EBSD formed a significant part of the work.  Experience of other spectroscopy techniques (EDS WLD, Raman, FT-IR) would be an advantage.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week and is fixed term for a period of 2 years.

Contact for informal discussion: The position can be discussed with Professor Neil James mjames@plymouth.ac.uk, telephone + 44 (0)1752 586 021.

Closing date: Midnight on Sunday 16th February 2014.

Postdoctoral research position at the Department of Geology, University of Maryland, College Park

Application deadline 2/28/2014

Postdoctoral researcher to work on a multidisciplinary project aimed at constraining crustal structure and composition using seismic data. The project entails close collaboration between geochemistry/petrology (Rudnick and McDonough) and seismology (Lekic). Therefore, the ideal applicant will have research interests spanning these fields of study. This full-time position is for a one year appointment starting by Fall 2014, with the possibility of extension. A Ph.D. in geophysics, geology, or a related discipline is required. The candidate should have research experience in seismology, petrology, and/or geochemistry, and must demonstrate a strong computational background needed for seismic data processing, inversion, and/or imaging. Applicants should submit a letter of application addressing scientific and technical qualifications along with a curriculum vita and list of references to Ved Lekic (ved@umd.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately, with a decision anticipated during Spring, 2014. The University of Maryland, College Park, actively subscribes to a policy of equal employment opportunity, and will not discriminate against any employee or applicant because of race, age, sex, color, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, ancestry or national origin, marital status, genetic information, political affiliation, and gender identity or expression. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply.

Postdoc position in environmental geochemistry and mineralogy

The Environmental Mineralogy and Biogeochemistry Group at Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in environmental geochemistry and mineralogy. The primary focus of this position will be on the interaction of hydrocarbon with carbonate minerals. Complementary wet chemical analysis as well as advanced microscopic and spectroscopic methods will be used to assess the nano scale heterogeneity of mineral surfaces and associated reactivity. PhD training in geosciences, chemistry, and/or environmental engineering is preferred. Extensive experiences are desired in at least one of the following areas: laboratory wet chemistry, atomic force microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy. There are also opportunities for participation in other research projects in the group.

Initial appointment is for one year with possible renewal for another year upon mutual satisfaction and funding availability. This position is immediately available and will remain open until filled. Interested applicants should submit a complete CV, statement of research interests, and the name and contact information of three references to Prof. Yuanzhi Tang ( yuanzhi.tang@eas.gatech.edu). Georgia Institute of Technology is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
