Los cuatro ateneos de Huelva (1888-1968) y la polémica ateneísta (1907-1908)

Resumen

La existencia del Ateneo en Huelva no ha sido suficientemente estudiada como tantos otros aspectos de la historia local onubense. Esto hecho ha provocado que las pocas referencias existentes a dicha institución adolezcan de ciertas imprecisiones y errores que impedían hacerse una idea clara de la evolución de la misma. El presente artículo cumple el objetivo de aclarar a grandes rasgos la presencia de los diferentes ateneos en nuestra ciudad sin ninguna pretensión de realizar una investigación en profundidad -desde luego necesaria-, sino más bien con el afán de suponer un mínimo punto de partida para la labor de posteriores investigadores. Dentro de dicha intención, el artículo traza el recorrido de esta noble institución desde que fuese fundada pon primera vez en 1888 hasta su definitiva disolución a finales de la década de 1960, pasando por sus refundaciones de 1907, 1923 y haciendo especial hincapié en la intensa polémica política que tuvo lugar en torno a él entre 1907 y 1908.__________________________________Like many other aspects of Onubense history, the existence of the Athenaeum in Huelva has not been subject of enough study. This fact has provoked that the few existing references about this institution suffer from certain mistakes and imprecisions, which makes it hard to have a clear picture of its evolution. The present article clarifies in a general way the presence of the different athenaeums in our city without any pretension to make a deep analysis, but to draw a starting point for further research. Our study follows the changes suffered by this institution since its foundation in 1888 until its dissolution by the end of the 1960s, going through all its re-foundations in 1907, 1923 and 1964, with a special emphasis on the intense political controversy around It between 1907-1908.
