His work, whose most known poem is the legend Altatar, follows the most common trends in Spanish 19th poetry, starting with the narrative poetry written after the model set by José Zorrilla and ending in the realistic, bourgeois poetry of the Restauration, represented by Ramón de Campoamor. His political career, that led him (already a higllschool teacher of Rhethoric) to be a minister and the Speaker of the Spanish Parliament, added another typical feature to his work, the rhetorical concern, that linked him to the same late 19th century poetry that was bitterly criticized by the turn-ofthe- century modernists.
