MICROALGAE BIOTECHNOLOGY UNIT

Presentations

The thematic line “Microalgae Biotechnology” focuses on the study and development of biotechnological applications, up to pilot scale, of new species of microalgae, particularly those from extreme environments. The research line includes the isolation of microorganisms from extreme environments, identification and phylogenetic approaches using molecular biology techniques, analysis of biotechnological potential, stimulation of the accumulation of high-value metabolites and polymers in human and animal nutrition and health, design and construction of photobioreactors for the production of microalgae enriched with these valuable molecules, and finally, the development of production processes at pilot scale.

The line is funded by 6 currently active research projects. The research is carried out at CIDERTA (Center for the Development of Agro-food Resources and Technologies at the University of Huelva). The University of Huelva has one of the main pilot plants for research in microalgae production in Research Centers in Andalusia at this Center.

CIDERTA also has highly qualified technical staff responsible for providing centralized services to the scientific community and the productive environment.
