TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

Environmental management and monitoring of the estuary of the Guadiana during the Holocene

ACRONYM:
GUADHOL

SUMMARY

The sediments Holocenos of the estuary of the river Guadiana reach several dozens of meters of thickness constituting an unsurpassable record of the last raise post-glacier of the level of the sea. On this substratum of sediments there develop extensive wetlands crossed by tidelands that sustain the complex and richest natural ecosystem, as well as diverse economic activities related principally to the production of salt, the fish farming and the fishing.

In a previous project realized in the frame of the Summons Interreg III - TO qualified "Monitorização and Gestão Ambiental two Sapais do Estuário do The Guadiana - Desenvolvimento da Ferramenta" (MEGASIG), approached conceptual and methodological aspects of Geochemical Organic and Inorganic, and of the Geology. Samples of sediments were analyzed in order to know the environmental quality of the estuary and to propose valid tools of support for the management and monitoring of the way in question. Of the analyzed samples taken along the riverbed of the river The Guadiana and of channels and tidelands placed in both margins, there were selected a total of 18 points of sampling for the monitoring of the environmental quality of the sediments in the time.

The present offer includes the analyses of control of saying points, as well as the analysis of a sedimentary column in depth that allows to know the characteristics of the whole landfill Holoceno and his possible alterations derived from events environmental - climatic or influenced by activities antrópicas. The foreseen study integrates the Activities of the groups involved in geology and chronology (UALG), Geochemical organic (IRNASE) and Geology and Geochemical Inorganic (UHU).

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The spatial and temporary analysis of the natural phenomena in constant change that they regulate the interface ocean - continent is very necessary since the recent demographic pressure to which the coastal zones meet submitted demands the conciliation of the diverse interests that come together in this zone of great ecological interest (Included in the network Nature 2000). All this by means of the development of an environmental versatile management tool, capable of supporting of effective form a sustainable management of the area and that compiles valuable information about the state of the interface water - sediment allowing "a posteriori" the update and extension of the created databases. Equally the project will transform the acquired results and will apply them for purposes of environmental education and promotion of the natural heritage of the estuary zone, contributing this way to the efficient dissemination among the regional persons in charge and promoting of form it activates the development of a society of information.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

General Aim

1. To estimate the environmental quality of the estuary of the river The Guadiana from the bio - geochemical point of view and to know the nature of the processes that along the history have happened, differing the natives from those from origin anthropy, so that they allow a management and inter-frontier monitoring of the mentioned environment for the conservation of the natural heritage.

Specific Aims

    1. Bio - geochemical characterization of the sediments and monitoring of the environmental state of the estuary of the river The Guadiana.

    2. Promotion of the results in the society of the information across the development of databases georeferenced and implemented in a system of Geographical information (SIG) and of an application of didactic and informative character.

    3. To develop a program of diffusion and exploitation of the results.

      METHODOLOGY AND PLAN OF WORK

        1. Documentation: there realizes a previous phase of bibliographical summary of the estuary of the river The Guadiana and his environment supported on projects of previous summons.

        2. Characterization of the way: The superficial sediments and of the deep poll they will be characterized in inorganic chemistry (lipid) terms, organic chemistry, the content of organic carbon, nitrogen and sulphur, as well as from the point of view textural and mineralogically.

        3. Integration of results: this phase consists of the implementation of the information of a system of Geographical information that allows a sustainable management of the way, and the development of a didactic tool that allows the diffusion of the results.

BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT, DIFFUSION AND EXPLOITATION OF THE RESULTS

          Benefits

The fundamental benefit will be to have the methodology and information adapted for the identification and process correction with transcendency in the environmental quality and the productivity of the ecosystems.

Difussion and exploitation of the results

The results obtained in this project will have several routes of diffusion:

          1. To scientific level contributions will be elaborated to congresses and articles of international diffusion in magazines indexed with the principal obtained results

          2. To didactic level an application will create multimedia for his distribution in the centers of education near the estuary of the Guadiana.
