TITLE OF THE PROJECT:
Roman cities of the Southwest of Roman Spain
ACRONYM:
CROSUDHIS

SUMMARY

As continuation of a previous project realized in the frame of the Summons Interreg III - A between January, 2006 and June, 2008, appears a new offer that extends the frame of action(performance) to the Roman cities located in the cross-border territories of The Algarve and Baixo Alentejo (Portugal) and Huelva (Spain).

The project tries to study and to spread the big ancient cities of the Algarve, Baixo Alentejo and Huelva: the three capitals of the region (Ossonoba/Faro in The Algarve, Pax Iulia/Beja in Alentejo and Onuba in Huelva) and two cities that were left in Roman epoch (Raft in The Algarve and Turobriga in Huelva). It will be appealed for it, to the new technologies that provide the SIG that allow to compile all the information generated about the chosen places. The project will be decisive to help to the capture of decisions in the urban development planning and to recover for the great public the real historical dimension of these cities of three regions with a common past that it is interested in recovering as factor of integral development.

PURPOSE

The studies on the city understood as principal element of social and economic joint of the territory, are considered in the last years as one more need in all those initiatives coordinated to penetrating into the RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT of our inhabited current cores.

On the other hand, the benefits of an research of these characteristics will be able to be taken advantage by the own dynamics of planning and urban development administration of the local entity by means of the constant update of the Archaeological Letters.

Finally, it is necessary to contemplate the practical application of the research on the city and his surrounding territory from the perspective of the development of technologies as the systems of Geographical information (SIG), considered as an important of integration element of the whole diversity of information that endures the research and study of what we can name the System of Cities in Planned Territories.

With all the previous premises, the existence of a project of research of Archaeology of the Roman cities in the cross-border area The Algarve-Baixo Alentejo-Huelva, finds in the beginnings of the new millenium his more logical justification.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

General Aim

  1. To know and to qualify the urban accessions of Roman epoch in the selected territories so that it allows to reconstruct, on the one hand, the historical process of the cities and his territories of influence and, of other one, to design a useful tool for a suitable management and diffusion of this rich Archaeological Heritage.

Specific Aims

  2. To elaborate the archaeological letters of the selected cities including the diagnosis on the state of conservation of the different analyzed enclaves.
  3. To develop a program of diffusion and exploitation of the results.

METHODOLOGY AND PLAN OF WORK

The methodological basic counterfoil gathers a structure arranged across the levels that we name of information, evaluation, intervention and projection.

Level of Information

Summary and treatment of all the available information generated from the production of the letter of the Risk, to obtain an Information system of the Historical Urban Heritage (SIPHU).

Level of Evaluation

The methodological counterfoil repays, formally and functionally, which we name as documents of evaluation and diagnosis or letters of the risk. The dynamics of a letter of the risk comes out of other methodological levels.

Level of Intervention

It represents the vertebraci贸n of the rest of the contemplated ones in the counterfoil, since of the intervention there is obtained the fundamental body of information that will allow to obtain the aims of the research and the adoption of the protection measures, conservation and diffusion.

Projection level

All the previous ones come together in this level obtaining this way the connection of the research with the society by means of the scientific projection that generates and spreads the historical, socio-economic synthesis and finally the urban development projection.
